About the project

Cantina Malpaga is a family winery in Canneto Pavese, in the Oltrepò Pavese, with vineyards also at Zenevredo and Montebello della Battaglia. They sell DOC wines and sparkling wines direct to people and receive visitors for tastings in the cellar. They needed a site that would do both things: explain where the wine comes from and sell it as well.

01

The structure of the site

The menu follows the route from vine to bottle: sustainable farming, the mapping of the vineyards, the winemaking, then the range split into sparkling wines, whites and rosés, reds. At the end come the tastings, the gallery, the shop and contact. Somebody arriving for the first time can read about the winery; somebody who already knows what they want jumps straight to the Shop.

02

The pages on vineyards and winemaking

The mapping is explained area by area: the light, well-ventilated land at Canneto Pavese, where the Croatina, Barbera and Uva Rara blend for Buttafuoco is made; the colder, clayey soils at Fontanelle di Zenevredo, with Pinot Nero clones; the warmer area at Montebello della Battaglia, with Barbera, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Moscato. The winemaking side goes there too, with the classic method, the Martinotti method and the ageing of the reds in wood. These are details an attentive buyer looks for and that a product sheet alone cannot carry.

03

The online shop

The wines are sold straight from the site, split into sparkling, whites and rosés, reds, each with the price per bottle. The conditions sit in plain view next to the catalogue: a minimum order of three bottles, no delivery charge, payment by cash on delivery, bank transfer or PayPal. We also put in plain view the notice that alcoholic drinks are not sold to minors.

04

The cellar tastings

The tastings have their own page, with what the visit involves — three wines, one of them sparkling, in a fourteenth-century hall, with the tasting led by the owner himself — plus the price per person and the number for booking. It is the only thing on the site that is not bought with a button, so the phone number appears in the header on every page, not only there.

How it looks on a phone

More than 9 in 10 people open a website on their phone, so that is where it is decided. These screens come from the site as it runs today.

Everything is in Italian, for the market the winery sells and delivers to. It holds the story of the place and the direct selling together, instead of leaving them in two separate places.
